Ciklus: AKIRA KUROSAWA Japonska, 1950 Režija: Akira Kurosawa Scenarij: Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto, po zgodbah Ryunosuke Akutagawa Igrajo: Toshirô Mifune, Machiko Kyô, Masayuki Mori Kurosawova vplivna mojstrovina se je v zgodovino vpisala z izjemno rabo načela multiple naracije oziroma nezanesljivih pripovedovalcev, ki so nosilci različnih, protislovnih pripovednih perspektiv. Izraziti suspenz, ki izvira iz ugibanja, katera je pristna in resnična, še danes buri gledalčevo domišljijo. Kurosawa je za film prejel beneškega zlatega leva in častnega oskarja. Trije popotniki se pred nevihto zatečejo v nekdanje svetišče Rašomon. Dva popotnika, duhovnik in lesar, se spominjata zgodbe o umorjenem samuraju, čigar truplo je našel lesar pred tremi dnevi v gozdu. Oba sta bila poklicana za priči na sodnem procesu. Duhovnik je pričal o srečanju s samurajem in njegovo ženo, ki sta potovala skozi gozd le nekaj trenutkov pred umorom. Na procesu so nastopile še tri priče: zloglasni bandit Tajômaru, ki naj bi umoril samuraja in posilil njegovo ženo, samurajeva žena in pa sam samuraj, ki zgodbo o lastni smrti razkrije skozi človeški medij. Vsak od njih pove zgodbo s podobno strukturo – to, da je Tajômaru ugrabil in zvezal samuraja ter posilil njegovo ženo, toda njihova pričevanja ne tvorijo skladne zgodbe o motivaciji in dejanskem poteku zločina.

Originalni opis filma:

A priest, a woodcutter and another man are taking refuge from a rainstorm in the shell of a former gatehouse called Rashômon. The priest and the woodcutter are recounting the story of a murdered samurai whose body the woodcutter discovered three days earlier in a forest grove. Both were summoned to testify at the murder trial, the priest who ran into the samurai and his wife traveling through the forest just before the murder occurred. Three other people who testified at the trial are supposedly the only direct witnesses: a notorious bandit named Tajômaru, who allegedly murdered the samurai and raped his wife; the white veil cloaked wife of the samurai; and the samurai himself who testifies through the use of a medium. The three tell a similarly structured story - that Tajômaru kidnapped and bound the samurai so that he could rape the wife - but which ultimately contradict each other, the motivations and the actual killing being what differ. The woodcutter reveals at Rashômon that he knows more than he let on at the trial, thus bringing into question his own actions. But another discovery at Rashômon and the resulting actions from the discovery bring back into focus the woodcutter's own humanity or lack thereof.
