Hongkonški policijski inšpektor Lee v Ameriki pomaga pri preiskavi ugrabitve hčerke kitajskega konzula, za katero ugrabitelj zahteva visoko odkupnino. Agentje FBI so nejevoljni, da se Lee vmešava v njihovo preiskavo. Zato se obrnejo na gobčnega policista Jamesa Carterja, ki naj bi pazil na Leeja. Lee in Carter se ne razumeta najbolje, a kljub temu kar sama začneta raziskovati primer.
