Baxter (Jason Bateman) in Annie (Nicole Kidman) sta odrasla brat in sestra, ki se vrneta v rodni kraj iskat svoja starša, razvpita umetnika zapletenih, mračnih javnih predstav – ki sta v nepojasnjenih okoliščinah nenadoma izginila.Baxter (Jason Bateman) in Annie (Nicole Kidman) sta odrasla brat in sestra, katerih starša sta bila razvpita umetnika zapletenih, mračnih konceptualnih javnih predstav; otroka jima nista nikoli povsem odpustila, da sta ju starša večkrat izkoristila za svoje gnusne, kontroverzne in satirične performanse. Še vedno se pogosto prepirata z ostarelima staršema, na katera še v svojih poznejših letih valita večino življenjskih težav. Vendar ju močno zaskrbi, ko jima policija iz rodnega kraja sporoči, da njuna starša pogrešajo po tistem, ko sta šla na izlet zunaj mesta. Baxter pomisli celo na to, da se jima je mogoče zgodilo nekaj strašnega, medtem ko je Annie prepričana, da gre spet le za eno od njunih trapastih iger ali izkrivljenih konceptualnih predstav. Annie and Baxter, the adult children of the controversial husband and wife conceptual performance art couple famous for their quirky macabre public performances, have never got over the fact that their parents kept using them during their childhood in their often gory and disturbing satirical public performances. They often clash with their now elderly parents over this and blame them for their problems in their adult life. However, the two become worried when they're told by the police that their parents have gone missing during their trip outside of town. The brother considers the possibility that something horrible might have happened to them, but the sister is convinced that it's just another one of their stupid games or twisted conceptual performances. She convinces him that they should go and look for them themselves.
